Comfort for the Contrite (Isaiah 57:14-21)

And it shall be said,

“Build up, build up, prepare the way,

remove every obstruction from my people's way.”

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up,

who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:

“I dwell in the high and holy place,

and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,

to revive the spirit of the lowly,

and to revive the heart of the contrite.

For I will not contend forever,

nor will I always be angry;

for the spirit would grow faint before me,

and the breath of life that I made.

Because of the iniquity of his unjust gain I was angry,

I struck him; I hid my face and was angry,

but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart.

I have seen his ways, but I will heal him;

I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners,

creating the fruit of the lips.

Peace, peace, to the far and to the near,” says the Lord,

“and I will heal him.

But the wicked are like the tossing sea;

for it cannot be quiet,

and its waters toss up mire and dirt.

There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.” (Isaiah 57:14-21, ESV)

그리스도인의 진정한 복은 낮아지는 것, 그것도 하나님 앞에 낮아지는 것이다.
그 낮아짐은 자신의 흉악한 죄성(과 그로 인한 결과물인 죄악들)을 직시하는 것, 그리고 하나님의 거룩하심과 위대하심을 인식하는 것에서 비롯된다.
인간 중 그 어느 누구도 하나님 앞에 쓸 만한 사람이라고 고개를 들 수 있는 자는 없다. 다만, 자신에 대해서, 그리고 하나님에 대해서 무지할(아니 넘쳐날) 뿐이다. 내가 그러는 것처럼...

언약을 굳게 잡은 고자들

"여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시기를 '나의 안식일을 지키며 내가 기뻐하는 일을 선택하며 나의 언약을 굳게 잡는 고자들에게는 내가 내 집에서, 내 성 안에서 아들이나 딸보다 나은 기념물과 이름을 그들에게 주며 영원한 이름을 주어 끊어지지 아니하게 할 것이며, 또 여호와와 연합하여 그를 섬기며 여호와의 이름을 사랑하며 그의 종이 되며 안식일을 지켜 더럽히지 아니하며 나의 언약을 굳게 지키는 이방인마다 내가 곧 그들을 나의 성산으로 인도하여 기도하는 내 집에서 그들을 기쁘게 할 것이며 그들의 번제와 희생은 나의 제단에서 기꺼이 받게 되리니 이는 내 집은 만민이 기도하는 집이라 일컬음이 될 것임이라.'"(사 56:4-7)


For thus says the Lord:
“To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths,
who choose the things that please me
and hold fast my covenant,
I will give in my house and within my walls
a monument and a name
better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
that shall not be cut off.
“And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord,
and to be his servants,
everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it,
and holds fast my covenant—
these I will bring to my holy mountain,
and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
will be accepted on my altar;
for my house shall be called a house of prayer
for all peoples.” (Isaiah 56:4-7, ESV)

고자처럼, 영적으로 볼 때, 스스로 생명을, 그리고 선한 열매를 생산할 능력이 전혀 없는 나이지만, 그런 내가 하나님을 경외하고, 그분의 언약을 굳게 잡을 때, 그분께서 나에게 아들이나 딸보다 나은 기념물과 이름을 주신다.

혈통적으로 이스라엘에 속하지 못하여 그들의 말대로 영원한 지옥의 불쏘시개가 되어 마땅한 이방인인 나이지만, 하나님과 연합하는 가운데, 하나님을 섬기고, 하나님의 이름을 사랑하고, 왕이신 그분의 종이되고 안식일을 지키며, 하나님의 언약을 믿음으로 받아들이고 그분의 언약을 굳게 지킨다면, 자격없는 나를 하나님의 거룩한 이름으로 일컫는 성스러운 산으로 인도하시며, 거기에서 기도하게 하시며, 자격없는 자가 드리는 희생 재물을 받으시며, 그 가운데 기쁨을 누리도록 허락하신다.

그것이 복음이 아니고 무엇이랴?

그것이 예수 그리스도로 인해 성취된 것이 아니고 무엇이랴?

고아와 과부를 돌보시는 하나님께서, 그보다도 못한 흉악한 죄인인 나를 지옥불에 던지지 않으시고, 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 구원하시고, 자녀삼아 주셔서, 고자인 나에게 생명을 누리게 하시고, 이방인인 나를 하나님 집의 식구로 맞아 주신다.

이보다 더 큰 복이 어디에 있을까?

그저... 감사... 감사할 따름이다...
