"If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up." (Daniel 3:17-18)
Daniel and his three friends' story always challenges me to check if I'm courageous enough or faithful enough to confront the world like them to preserve my faith and trust in God.
In this short answer of Daniel's friends, I tend to focus more on their firm belief in God's miraculous work that will deliver them who struggle keep faith from the attack of the world. But what is the most important here is the phrase "but if not". I trust in Him and don't betray Him not because He will save me from all the trials and lead me to a victorious life in this world, but because He is my creator, god, savor, and father. In His providence He may deliver me from sufferings, but He may not. The decision is up to Him, not to me. As a creature, son, and worshipper, all I can do is just go the way that will please Him.
