아침(새벽)에 경건의 시간을 가져야만 하는 이유 3

아침에는 우리가 다른 사람들과 함께 있어야 하는 경우나 일들부터 가장 자유로우며 일반적으로 조용하고 한적한 시간을 갖기에 가장 적합한 때이다. 게으른 자요, 네가 어느 때까지 누워 잠을 자겠느냐고 그들의 소명이 부를 때까지도 잠이 덜 깨어 이리 뒤척 저리 뒤척하며 이불 속에 누워 있는 게으름뱅이가 아니라면, 사업일로 바빠지기 전에 그들의 믿음을 위해 아침에 시간을 갖는 것이, 이 세상에서 할 일이 많고 하루 중 일 분이 아쉬운 사람들의 지혜이다. 그래야만이 그들은 그 일을 완전히 할 수 있으며, 더욱 몰두할 수가 있다.

하나님께 경배드리고 싶은 때는, 내적으로 무감각하고 우둔하지 않을 때 즉 외적으로 주의가 산만하고 분요하지 않을 때이다. 사도 바울은 분요함이 없이 주를 섬기는 것에 우리가 얼마나 주의를 기울여야 하는지를(고전 7:35) 암시해 주고 있다. 따라서 7일 중에 하루는 (이것 또한 한 주일의 첫 번째 날로서, 한 주일의 아침이다.) 거룩한 일을 위하여 예정되어 있으며, 다른 모든 일을 쉬는 날로 되어 있다. 아브라함은 하나님을 섬기러 산 위에 올라갈 때에 산 아래 모든 것을 남겨 두고 갔다. 그러니 우리는 이생의 문제 속으로 휘말려 들기 전에, 아침 일찍 하나님과 대화를 나누며 다른 차원의 생에 관심을 가져보자. 우리 주 예수님께서 친히 본보기를 보여 주셨다. 그의 생애는 전적으로 하나님과 인간의 영혼을 위한 일들로 가득 차 있었기 때문에 날이 밝기 훨씬 전, 무리들이 모여들기 훨씬 전에 일어나셔서 한적한 곳에 나가 기도하셨다(막 1:35).

In the morning we are most free from company and business, and ordinarily have the best opportunity for solitude and retirement; unless we be of those sluggards who lie in bed with .yet a little sleep, a little slumber, till the work of their calling calls them up, with, How long wilt thou sleep, 0 sluggard? It is the wisdom of those who have much to do in the world, that they have scarce a minute to themselves of all day, to take time in the morning before business crowds in upon them, for the business of their religion; that they may be entire for it, and therefore the more intent upon it.

As we are concerned to worship God, when we are least burthened with deadness and dulness within, so also when we are least exposed to distraction and diversion from without; the Apostle intimates how much it should be our care to attend upon the Lord without distraction (1 Cor. vii. 35). And therefore that one day in seven (and it is the first day, too, the morning of the week) which is appointed for holy work, is appointed to be a day of rest from other work. Abraham leaves all at the bottom of the hill, when he goes up into the mount to worship God. In the morning, therefore, let us converse with God, and apply ourselves to the concerns of the other life, before we are entangled in the affairs of this life. Our Lord Jesus has set us an example of this, who, because his day was wholly filled up with public business for God and the souls of men, rose up in the morning a great while before day, and before company came in, and went out into a solitary place, and there prayed (Mark i. 35).
