아침(새벽)에 경건의 시간을 가져야만 하는 이유 6

6. 아침에는 하나님에 대하여 새롭게 생각하며 그의 이름을 묵상하며 아니 그렇게 해야 하며, 그것들을 기도 가운데 그분께 올려 드려야 한다. 다윗의 본보기처럼 우리는 우리의 “침상에서 주를 기억하며 밤중에 주를 묵상”(시 63:6)했는가? 다윗이 그랬던 것처럼 우리도 깨어나 여전히 하나님과 함께 있다고 말할 수 있는가? 그렇다면 우리는 우리 입술의 말을 가지고 은혜의 보좌에 나아가 우리 마음의 묵상을 하나님께 드려야 할 것이며 그리하여 그것은 주님께 드리는 향기로운 냄새나는 제사가 될 것이다. 만일 마음에서부터 좋은 말이 우러나오면, 당신의 혀로 하여금 왕 앞에 그것을 쏟아 놓는 필객의 붓과 같이 되게 하라(시 45:1).

하나님과 대화를 나눌 수 있도록 하나님의 말씀이 있으니, 우리는 매일 아침 성경 말씀을 읽어야 한다. 하나님께서는 그것을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하시므로 우리는 밤낮으로 그 말씀을 묵상해야 한다. 그렇게 한다면 그것은 우리들을 은혜의 보좌로 인도할 것이며 그곳에서 많은 좋은 것들로 우리를 채워 줄 것이다.

6. In the morning we have, or should have had, fresh thoughts of God, and sweet meditations on his name, and those we ought to offer up to him in prayer. Have we been, according to David's example, remembering God upon our beds, and meditating upon him in the night-watches? When we awake, can we say as he did, We are still with God? If so, we have a good errand to the throne of grace by the words of our mouths, to offer up to God the meditations of our hearts, and it will be to him a sacrifice of a sweet smelling savour. If the heart has been inditing a good matter, let the tongue be as the pen of a ready writer, to pour it out before God (Pa. xlv. 1).

We have the word of God to converse with, and we ought to read a portion of it every morning: by it God speaks to us, and in it we ought to meditate day and night, which, if we do, that will send us to the throne of grace, and furnish us with many a good errand there. If God in the morning by his grace direct his word to us, so as to make it reach our hearts, that will engage us to direct our prayer to him.
