아침(새벽)에 경건의 시간을 가져야만 하는 이유 7

7. 아침에는 밤사이에 우리 마음에 도사리고 있던 헛되고 죄된 많은 생각들을 반성해 볼 수 있는 기회를 갖게 되어 두려워진다. 그렇기 때문에 그것들을 용서받기 위하여 아침에 하나님께 기도드릴 필요가 있다. 주기도문에 “일용할 양식을 주옵시며”라고 기도드리게 되어 있는 것으로 보아, 우선적으로 아침에 드리도록 고안된 것 같다. 그 다음에는 “우리의 죄를 용서하시고”라고 되어 있다. 분주하게 하루를 지내면서 일관성이 없는 말과 행실로서 죄를 짓게 되며, 부패된 생각과 절제되지 못한 환상 속을 방황하며, 밤의 적막 속에서 죄를 짓게 된다. 미련한 자의 생각이 죄가 된다는 것(잠 24:9)은 분명하다. 미련한 생각은 곧 죄된 생각이며 모든 죄의 시작이다. 우리가 살고 있는 곳이면 어디든지 너무나 많은 헛된 생각들이 숨어 있다. 그 수가 많기 때문에 그들의 이름은 군대라 한다. 누가 이러한 잘못들을 이해할 수 있는가? 그것들은 우리 머리의 머리카락 수보다도 더 많다. “침상에서 악을 꾀하며 간사를 경영하고 그 날이 밝으면 ...... 그것을 행하는 자”(미 2:1)에 대하여 읽어 보았다. 밤이 되면 수없이 의심하고 염려하는 생각들로 마음이 불안해지고 미혹케 되며, 부정하고 음란한 생각들로 오염되고, 솟구치는 교만한 생각들로 인해 도취되며, 경건한 생각들은 수없이 많은 무례한 것들에 의해 침해당한다. 우리와 함께 눕고 함께 일어나는 악한 생각들이 우리의 마음에 서부터 나오며, 우리가 어디를 가든지 함께 따라 다니는 이 부패된 샘에서부터 이런 샘물이 자연적으로 흘러나온다(전 5:2). 많은 말에 뿐만 아니라 많은 꿈속에도 허다한 허영이 담겨 있다.

매일 밤낮으로 회개할 일을 저지르는 우리가 그것을 새롭게 하기 전에 감히 나갈 수가 있는가? 우리의 마음이 방황하며, 반항과 고집으로 불평하며 타락하기 쉽다는 것을 아시는 주님께 자백하고 그리스도의 보혈로 말미암아 평화를 누리며, 우리 마음의 생각들이 용서받을 수 있도록 기도하는 일에 힘쓰지 않겠는가? 자백하여 용서받지 않은 죄를 않고서는 하루의 일과를 안전하게 시작할 수가 없다.

 

7. In the morning it is to be feared, we find cause to reflect upon many vain and sinful thoughts that have been in our minds in the night season; and upon that account it is necessary that we address ourselves to God by prayer in the morning, for the pardon of them. The Lord's prayer seems to be calculated primarily in the letter of it for the morning: for we are taught to pray for our daily bread this day: and yet we are then to pray, Father, forgive us our trespasses: for as in the hurry of the day we contract guilt by our irregular words and actions, so we do in the solitude of the night by our corrupt imaginations, and the wanderings of an unsanctified ungoverned fancy. It is certain, The thought of foolishness is sin (Pro. xxiv. 9). Foolish thoughts are sinful thoughts; the first-born of the old man, the first beginning of all sin; and how many of these vain thoughts lodge within us wherever we lodge? their name is Legion, for they are many: who can understand their errors? They are more than the hairs of our head. We read of those who work evil upon their beds, because there they devise it; and when the morning is light they practise it (Mic. ii. 1). How often in the night-season is the mind disquieted and distracted with distrustful careful thoughts; polluted with unchaste and wanton thoughts; intoxicated with proud aspiring thoughts; soured and leavened with malicious revengeful thoughts; or, at the best, diverted from devout and pious thoughts by a thousand impertinences: out of the heart proceed evil thoughts which lie down with us, and rise up with us, for out of that corrupt fountain, which, wherever we go, we carry about with us, the streams naturally flow. Yes, and in the multitude of dreams, as well as in many words, there are also divers vanities (Ecc. v. 2).

And dare we go abroad till we have renewed our repentance, which we are every night as well as every day thus making work for? Are we not concerned to confess to him who knows our hearts, their wanderings from him, to complain of them to him as revolting and rebellious hearts, and bent to backslide; to make our peace with the blood of Christ, and to pray, that the thought of our heart may be forgiven us? we cannot with safety go into the business of the day under the guilt of any sin unrepented of or unpardoned.
