아침(새벽)에 경건의 시간을 가져야만 하는 이유 8

8. 아침에는 하루의 일과를 시작하게 됨에 따라 하나님께서 함께하시며 복주실 것을 기도로 간구하는 일에 관심이 있게 된다. 우리는 우리의 잘못을 용서해 주시도록 자비를 구할 뿐만 아니라, 필요할 때마다 도움을 주시도록 은혜를 구하기 위해서도 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 수 있다. 우리가 주님을 필요로 하지 않은 때가 언제인가? 그러니 기도하지 않고 지나칠 수 있는 아침이 어디 있겠는가? 우리는 매일 같이 번제를 드려야 하는 것에 대해 읽어 볼 수 있다(스 3:4). 그와 마찬가지로 우리에게 주님께서 자비롭게 섭리해 주실 것과 성령님께서 은혜롭게 역사해 주실 것을 기도하기 위하여 매일 아침 하나님께 나아가야 한다.

우리에게 돌보고 부양해야 할 가족이 있으며 그들이 잘되는 데에 관심이 있다. 그렇다면 매일 아침 기도로서 그들을 하나님께 부탁하며, 그들을 하나님의 은혜의 통치와 지휘 아래 두어 효과적으로 주님의 보호하심과 관심 속에 이끌 수 있도록 하자. 경건한 욥은 그의 아이들을 위해 번제를 드리려고 아침 일찍 일어났다. 우리도 그들의 명 수 대로 기도와 간구를 드림으로 그와 같이 해야 한다(욥 1:5). 그리하여 주님의 축복이 우리 가정 위에 머물도록 해야 하겠다.

우리의 생업을 위하여 나가려 할 때, 먼저 하나님을 바라보고 그 일들을 잘 관리해 나갈 수 있도록 지혜와 은혜를 구하고, 하나님을 두려워하는 가운데 하나님 안에 거하며 그 일들을 행하고, 믿음으로 우리가 그 일에 번영하고 성공할 것과 주님께서 그 일에 필요한 힘을 공급하시며 피곤할 때 붙들어 주시고 그 일들을 계획할 때에 인도해 주시며 위로가 되는 결과를 허락하시도록 기도하자. 여행을 하려 할 때는 하나님께서 우리와 함께 하실 것을 바라고, 믿음으로 하나님께서 함께 가 주실 것을 기도드릴 수 없는 곳이라면 가지 말자.

일이 잘되어 갈 좋은 기회가 보이면 그것을 발전시키기 위하여, 우리 손에 달려 있는 모든 것들 즉 기술과 의지와 용기에 열심을 품을 수 있도록 하나님께 기도함으로써 어리석은 자처럼 되지 않도록 하자. 또한 매일같이 유혹이 뒤따른다. 어떤 것들은 우리가 미리 예견했던 것이 있겠지만, 생각지도 못한 것이 더 많을 것이다. 그러니 우리는 어떠한 유혹에도 끌려가지 않고 모든 것으로부터 보호받으며, 어떤 일터에 들어가더라도 선을 행하고 그들에게 해를 끼치지 않는 지혜를 얻고, 좋은 일을 당하고 해를 받지 않는 지혜를 갖기 위하여 하나님께 열심을 품도록 노력해야 한다.

우리에게 어떤 하루가 다가올지 무슨 소식을 듣게 될지, 밤이 되기 전에 어떤 일이 일어날지를 전혀 생각해 볼 수 없다. 따라서 우리가 미리 볼 수 있는 것뿐만 아니라 미리 볼 수 없는 우리의 의무와 어려움도 은혜 속에서 지날 수 있도록 하나님께 간구해야 한다. 모든 하나님의 뜻에 온전하게 서기 위하여 날이면 날마다 주의 능력을 힘입어야 한다. 그 날의 걱정은 그 날로 충분하므로 내일 일을 걱정하는 것이 어리석은 것처럼, 오늘로서 충분한 오늘의 일을 생각해 보는 것이 현명하다는 것을 깨닫게 될 것이다. 그리고 그 일이란 모든 선한 말과 선한 일을 위하여 온전히 우리에게 채워 주시며, 모든 악한 말과 악한 일에 대항하여 우리를 온전히 강하게 하시는 주님의 은혜를 공급하는 일일 것이다. 그리하여 밤에 또 다시는 생각하거나 말하거나 행하고 싶지 않은 것들을 하루종일 생각지도 말하지도 행하지도 않게 될 것이다.

8. In the morning we are addressing ourselves to the work of the day, and therefore are concerned by prayer to seek unto God for his presence and blessing. We come, and are encouraged to come boldly to the throne of grace, not only for mercy to pardon what has been amiss, but for grace to help in every time of need: and what time is it that is not a time of need with us? And therefore, what morning should pass without morning-prayer? We read of that which the duty of every day requires, (Ezr.iii. 4.) and in reference to that we must go to God every morning to pray for the gracious disposal of his providence concerning us, and the gracious operations of his Spirit upon us.

We have families to look after, it may be, and to provide for, and are in care to do well for them; let us then every morning by prayer commit them to God, put them under the conduct and government of his grace, and then we effectually put them under the care and protection of his providence. Holy Job rose up early in the morning to offer burnt-offerings for his children, and we should do so to offer up prayers and supplications for them, according to the number of them all (Job i. 5). Thus we cause the blessing to rest on our houses.

We are going about the business of our callings perhaps, let us look up to God in the first place for wisdom and grace to manage them well, in the fear of God, and to abide with him in them; and then we may in faith beg of him to prosper and succeed us in them, to strengthen us for the services of them, to support us under the fatigues of them, to direct the designs of them, and to give us comfort in the gains of them. We have journies to go, it may be, let us look up to God for his presence with us, and go no whither, where we cannot in faith beg of God to go with us.

We have a prospect perhaps of opportunities of doing or getting good, let us look up to God for a heart to every price in our hands, for skill, and will, and courage to improve it, that it may not be a price in the hand of a fool. Every day has its temptations too, some perhaps we foresee, but there may be many more that we think not of, and are therefore concerned to be earnest with God, that we may not be led into any temptation, but guarded against every one; that whatever company we come into, we may have wisdom to do good, and no hurt to them; and to get good, and no hurt by them.

We know not what a day may bring forth; little think in the morning what tidings we may hear, and what events may befall us before night, and should therefore beg of God, grace to carry us through the duties and difficulties which we do not foresee, as well as those which we do; that in order to our standing complete in all the will of God, as the day is, so the strength may be. We shall find that sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, and that, therefore, as it is folly to take thought for to-morrow's event, so it is wisdom to take thought for to-day's duty, that sufficient unto this day, and the duty of it, may be the supplies of the divine grace, thoroughly to furnish us for every good word and work, and thoroughly to fortify us against every evil word and work; that we may not think, or speak, or do any thing in all the day, which we may have cause upon any account to wish unthought, unspoken, and undone at night.
