아침(새벽)에 경건의 시간을 가져야만 하는 이유 1

(아침에 경건의 시간을 가져야 할 여덟 가지 이유)

1. 아침은 하루의 첫 부분이다. 따라서 가장 위에 계신 주님께서 첫 번째 자리에서, 처음으로 예배를 받으시는 것은 합당하다. 이방인들도 무엇을 하든지 신과 더불어 시작하라(A Jove Principium)고 말할 수 있었다. 세상은 하나님으로부터 시작되었고 우리도 그렇다. 따라서 무슨 일을 시작하든지 그를 함께 모시는 것은 우리에게 달려 있다. 이성의 태양이 우리의 영혼에 솟아오르자마자 우리 인생의 나날을 하나님께 드리며 그에게 예배드려야 한다. 아침에 동이 틀 때부터 새벽이슬 같은 청년들이 그리스도 앞에 나가기를 바란다.(시 110:3) 첫 열매와 짐승들의 첫 수확은 언제나 주님의 것이었다. 아침과 저녁기도로서 우리는 알파와 오메가 되시며 처음과 나중되시는 주님께 영광을 돌리며, 그와 더불어 하루를 시작하고 마무리 지어야 한다. 그는 시작이며 끝이 되시고 처음이시고 또한 나중이시기 때문이다.

젊어서부터 나를 찾으며, 아침 일찍부터 나를 찾는 자는 나를 만나리라고 지혜가 말씀하셨다. 왜냐하면 이로써 하나님께서 마땅히 받으셔야 할 것, 즉 무엇보다 좋은 것을 드리며, 우리가 그를 기쁘시게 하는 일과 그에게 인정받는 일에 관심을 기울이고 있으며, 우리가 주님을 진실하게 구하고 있음을 나타내주기 때문이다. 우리가 진지하게 행해야 하는 것은 아침 일찍이 하라고 성경에서도 말씀하고 있다.(시 101:8) 부지런한 사람은 아침 일찍 일어난다. “하나님이여! 주는 나의 하나님이시라. 내가 간절히 주를 찾되”(시 101:8)라고 하면서 다윗은 그 온 마음과 정성으로 주께 헌신함을 표현했다.

The Heathen could say, A Jove Principium-Let your beginning bs with Jupiter. Whatever you do, begin with God. The world had its beginning from him, we had ours, and therefore whatever we begin, it concerns us to take him along with us in it. The days of our life, as soon as ever the sun of reason rises in the soul. should be devoted to God, and employed in his service; From the womb of the morning, let Christ have the dew of thy youth (Ps. cx. 3). The first-fruits were always to be the Lord's and the firstlings of the flock. By morning and evening prayer we give glory to him who is the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last; with him we must begin and end the day, begin and end the night, who is the beginning and the end, the first cause and the last end.

Wisdom has said, Those that seek me early shall find me; early in their lives, early in the day; for hereby we give to God that which he ought to have, the preference above other things. Hereby we shew that we are in care to please him, and to approve ourselves to him, and that we seek him diligently. What we do earnestly we are said in Scripture to do early (Ps. ci. 8). Industrious men rise betimes; David expresses the strength and warmth of his devotion, when he says, O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee (Ps. lxiii. 1).
